EchoWords · Chrome

Google Drive

EchoWords · Chrome extension

Privacy Policy

Updated October 23, 2026

EchoWords saves words you explicitly select from web pages, currently visible YouTube captions, and PDFs. Your notebook is stored first in the local database of your current Chrome profile.

Data stored on your device

EchoWords stores words and your edits, nearby article text or visible caption context, source titles and URLs, capture times, YouTube video IDs and timestamps, and translations. Review dates, intervals, and counts are stored in local IndexedDB. Your Chinese target-language preference, sync device ID, and the identifier of the last authorized Google account are stored in this Chrome profile’s localStorage.

Manual Google Drive sync

Only when you select “Push local to cloud” does EchoWords upload this device’s full notebook to the hidden app data folder of the Google Drive account you authorized. This includes words, source URLs and excerpts, capture records, translations, review records, and deletion markers. Only when you select “Update local from cloud” does EchoWords download snapshots from that folder and merge them locally. Capturing a word does not start an upload.

Sync uses Google authorization; no EchoWords account is required. EchoWords reads the authorized account’s email address and identifier through the Google Drive API to show and confirm the sync destination. It stores only the account identifier locally so it can warn you when the account changes. Cloud snapshots reside in Google Drive’s appDataFolder and do not appear in the normal My Drive file list. Snapshots are kept separately for each device and are not automatically deleted by a local update.

EchoWords does not send your notebook to a developer server, analytics provider, or advertiser. Its use of Google API data is limited to the sync feature described here and follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.

Translation, import, and export

After you choose a Chinese target language, EchoWords uses Chrome’s built-in Translator API to translate saved English and Chinese words on your device; it does not request translation from a remote AI service. Chrome may download required language packs. A JSON file is created only when you choose an export action: “Export for iPhone” contains words and their translations, while “Export JSON” contains full backup records. Export does not upload a file. Import reads only the backup you select and merges valid records locally; it does not upload automatically.

Chrome permissions

EchoWords does not monitor your clipboard, automatically collect whole pages, or download complete YouTube transcripts.

Retention and deletion

Local data remains until you delete words, clear extension data, remove the extension, or delete your Chrome profile. Deleting a word creates a deletion marker so other devices can recognize the deletion on a later cloud update. Drive snapshots remain in your Google account until you remove the associated app data; clearing the local notebook and pushing updates their logical contents but does not remove the cloud files. You can create a local backup with “Export JSON.”
